Separate from the main prison complex stands Rockville Penitentiary's Death House, a stark two-story brick building reserved exclusively for inmates sentenced to capital punishment. Built in the mid-20th century, the structure was designed with security, isolation, and efficiency in mind. Thick concrete walls, reinforced steel doors, and narrow windows give the building a cold, institutional appearance, separating it both physically and psychologically from the rest of the prison population.

The upper floor serves as the administrative and medical section of the facility. Several secure holding cells are used to house condemned inmates awaiting scheduled transfers downstairs during the final stages of their sentence. Adjacent to the cells is a compact medical wing where physicians and nurses conduct routine examinations and pre-execution health assessments. At the opposite end of the corridor are the officer's quarters, including offices, a briefing room, locker facilities, and a small break area for correctional staff assigned to the Death House.

The ground floor is dedicated entirely to the final phase of incarceration. Three heavily secured Death Watch Cells line one side of a narrow corridor. Inmates are transferred here during the final days before their scheduled execution, where they remain under constant observation by correctional officers twenty-four hours a day. Bright overhead lighting, reinforced steel furnishings, and continuous surveillance ensure the area remains tightly controlled.

At the end of the corridor, a heavy reinforced door opens into the Execution Chamber. The room is dominated by Rockville's historic electric chair, positioned beneath overhead lighting and surrounded by monitoring equipment. Adjacent to the chamber is a modest Witness Gallery, separated by a large observation window where authorized witnesses—including prison officials, legal representatives, media witnesses, and approved family members—may observe the proceedings.

Connected to the execution chamber is a secure Utility Room, inaccessible to witnesses or inmates. This area contains the electrical control equipment, monitoring instruments, and maintenance systems used to support the operation of the execution chamber. Only specially trained personnel are permitted access to this room during official procedures.

Although meticulously maintained, the Death House carries an unmistakably somber atmosphere. Quiet corridors, polished concrete floors, and decades of institutional history give the building a weight that extends beyond its architecture. For staff assigned to the unit, it represents one of the most demanding posts within Rockville Penitentiary—a place defined not by daily prison life, but by the gravity of carrying out the institution's final legal responsibility.
