A Wing

"A Wing" is the primary general population housing unit at Rockville Penitentiary, reserved for inmates serving sentences of 20 years or less. Housed in its own self-contained concrete structure, the building was designed to accommodate offenders considered lower security risks than those assigned to the prison's maximum-security units, while still maintaining strict institutional control.

The facility consists of four tiers of prison cells, each connected by steel walkways overlooking a central open atrium. Individual cells are modest and utilitarian, furnished with a steel bunk, combination sink and toilet, wall-mounted desk, and narrow barred window that provides limited natural light. During designated hours, inmates are permitted to move within their assigned tier under the supervision of correctional officers stationed at elevated control posts.

The heart of "A Wing" is its central mess hall, where inmates gather three times daily for meals according to a tightly regulated schedule. The mess hall also serves as a common assembly area for announcements, orientation sessions, and institutional activities when required. Adjacent corridors connect to medical examination rooms, supply storage, laundry facilities, interview rooms, and administrative offices.

Separate from the inmate housing areas are the faculty quarters, which provide workspace and accommodations for correctional staff, counselors, educators, and administrative personnel assigned exclusively to "A Wing". These areas include offices, briefing rooms, locker facilities, and a secure staff lounge inaccessible to inmates.

Although A Wing houses offenders serving comparatively shorter sentences, security remains uncompromising. Electronic locking systems, surveillance cameras, controlled movement schedules, routine headcounts, and frequent patrols maintain order throughout the building. The atmosphere is structured and disciplined, with an emphasis on stability, institutional routine, and preparing eligible inmates for eventual reintegration into society.

Within Rockville Penitentiary, A Wing represents the prison's largest population center—a regimented environment where daily life follows an unchanging rhythm of counts, meals, work assignments, recreation, and confinement behind steel doors.
