Elizabeth Claire Morgan is a former American university student convicted of capital offenses under the Wartime National Security Act following her involvement in the Students for Peace and Accountability (SPA), a student-led anti-war organization at Eastbridge University. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Morgan was raised in a middle-class American family. She enrolled at Eastbridge University in August 2023, majoring in Journalism. Her academic interests included investigative reporting, documentary photography, freedom of the press, and political communication. In early 2025, following the government's announcement of Operation Iron Horizon and an expanded military assistance package to a foreign government involved in an ongoing war, Morgan became actively involved in the student anti-war movement. She subsequently became a co-founder and Communications Director of SPA. Morgan was responsible for preparing organizational statements, coordinating press communications, managing social media publications, photographing demonstrations, and editing the organization's publication, The February Letters. She worked closely with fellow SPA co-founder Mei Lin Park, who was primarily responsible for political essays and written commentary. While Park concentrated on political philosophy and the ideological direction of the organization, Morgan focused on journalism, public communications, and the distribution of its publications. Prosecutors later alleged that Morgan knowingly assisted in distributing classified military materials through the organization's publication. The defense maintained that she had acted as a student journalist and lacked knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of those materials. On May 19, 2025, Morgan participated in a major anti-war demonstration outside the administration building of Eastbridge University. At approximately 3:40 PM, federal and local law enforcement officers intervened at the demonstration to arrest individuals suspected of involvement in the unauthorized acquisition and distribution of classified military documents. Morgan was arrested at the protest site alongside fellow SPA co-founder Mei Lin Park. At the time of her arrest, Morgan was reportedly carrying organizational documents and a press camera. Footage of both students being taken into custody circulated widely on social media. Their arrests attracted considerable national and international attention and became a defining event in the controversy surrounding SPA. Morgan was prosecuted alongside Mei Lin Park in the same federal capital case. The prosecution argued that Morgan knowingly participated in the distribution of classified military information and assisted the organization's alleged wartime conspiracy. The defense argued that her responsibilities were primarily journalistic and administrative, and that her work should not be equated with participation in an unlawful conspiracy. On November 21, 2025, Morgan was convicted of the capital offenses and sentenced to death. Her conviction and sentence were announced on the same day as Park's. On December 8, 2025, Morgan was transferred to Appalachian Detention Complex and assigned to Death Row, Unit D, Cell D-13, adjacent to the housing assignment of Mei Lin Park. During 2026, her legal team pursued appellate and post-conviction remedies. Her direct appeal was rejected on April 28, 2026. The Supreme Court declined to hear her case on July 16, 2026, and her post-conviction petition was denied on September 3, 2026. Morgan remains incarcerated at Appalachian Detention Complex under a capital sentence. All ordinary appeals have been exhausted. Morgan has indicated that she intends to exercise her execution-method selection right under ADC regulations rather than accept the institutional default.
